Sephora PLAY! 3 month review

I have tried a few different beauty box subscriptions and usually end up canceling them. Most recently, IPSY. I really enjoyed ipsy for the first 6 months or so, but then I just kept getting bad boxes, even after re-taking the beauty quiz. I had the same issue with Birchbox. Although, I did hang on to Birchbox for about a year because I really liked their points program.

I have been trying Sephora Play for the last 3 months and thought I’d post a full review of the products and service, instead of just showing you what I received every month.

ABOUT SEPHORA PLAY!

s1001-main-lhero

Sephora play is a beauty box subscription offered by Sephora.com (obviously!) Like most beauty boxes, it is $10.00 per month. Each month will have a different theme and you will receive 5-6 products ranging from deluxe sample size to travel size, plus a perfume bonus sample. You will get charged $10.00 to your card on the first of each month and receive your box towards the end of the month. You will also receive 10 beauty insider points per box, and a card to redeem 50 bonus points towards a purchase made that month.

Now, lets get into the boxes I have received…

September 2016

For some reason, I haven’t been taking photos of all of my boxes so I took screen shots from my Sephora account instead, bad blogger.. I know!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel

The full sized product retails for $22.00. The tube I received was 1/3 of the full sized, so about a $7.00 value. This is definitely a cult classic eyebrow product. I actually prefer the mini version of this because it has a smaller wand and the tube actually lasts a long time so I was super pumped to get this in my first box! This stuff is like super glue for your brows, but doesn’t get too crunchy.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

The full sized version of this liner retails for $20.00. The one I received was about half the size of the full sized one, so there is the $10.00 I paid for the box already worth the money. I actually had just ran out of this product when I received this box, they read my mind. This product is great, easy to use, lasts long and is highly pigmented, I have no complaints!

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Overnight Protector

The full sized version of this retails for $28.00 for 4 oz, the tube I received was 1 oz (so about $7 value). I was actually surprised at how much I like this product. You apply it after you wash your hair and sleep with it in, no blow drying. I have really fine hair so I typically stay away from any leave-in products because they weigh my hair down. This doesn’t. It’s great for nights when I’m too lazy to dry my hair because with this I don’t wake up with a huge frizz ball on my head. It leaves your hair silky, but not weighed down.

Sephora Collection Rouge Shine Lipstick

Full sized product retails for $12.00. The tube I received was about 1/3 of the size, so a $4.00 value. This is just okay, but honestly I didn’t have high expectations, I’ve never had luck with the sephora brand lipsticks. It’s a great wash of color for a “no makeup makeup” day, but does not last long at all.

Tory Burch Jolie Fleur Verte

I honestly don’t remember what this smelled like, but I know I threw it away immediately because I hated it. lol

Dr. Jart Water Drop Moisturizer

The full size tube is 3.3 oz and retails for $36.00. I received a 1 oz tube (so, travel size) so about a $12.00 value. This product is really cool / weird. It has a gel-like consistency until you start to rub it in, then it literally turns to water on your face! This is great for oily / combination or normal skin, but probably isn’t enough for dry skin.

Total value of the box: $40.00

Tom Ford Orchid Soleil

Also hated this and threw it away immediately. lol

Skin Inc Pure Revival Peel

The full size bottle is 2 oz and retails for $55.00. I received 0.25 oz tube (about a $7.00 value). I was honestly a little scared to try this. Anytime in the past that I have used something with the word “peel” in the title I have had bad reactions. It was not the case with this product though. This peel is gentle, but definitely works! You can feel and see the dry skin coming off of your face. I definitely recommend trying this!

Verb Leave-in Mist

The full sized bottle is 8 oz and retails for $14.00. I received a 1 oz bottle, about $1.75 value. This stuff smells so good! It is light-weight enough that it doesn’t weigh my hair down and helps de-tangle.

Nude Stix Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencil

The full sized stick retails for $24.00, I received half size so $12.00 value. This is a really pretty warm nude. I haven’t tried it on my cheeks yet, although I do plan on it. It is very matte so if you don’t like super matte / almost drying lipsticks you probably won’t like this. But I do think it is good quality and will continue to use it.

TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL Egg Mellow Cream

The full size bottle is 1.7 oz and retails for $36.00. I received a 0.25 oz bottle, so about a $9.00 value. I absolutely loved this stuff! I went through the little bottle within 2 weeks. You can use this all over your face as a day time moisturizer, night cream or eye cream! I specifically loved this for under the eyes. It helped with my under eye dryness and saw a difference in with my fine lines as well.

Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick – Shade Driver’s Seat

The full sized tube retails for $24.00. The one I received was 1/3 of the size so about and $8.00 value. Plus, how often do you actually do through a full size liquid lipstick? This one is great. Super long-wearing and not too drying. I surprisingly did not have a color like this.

Total value of the box: $37.75

Cover FX Illuminating Primer

The full size tube of this is 1 oz and retails for $38.00. I received a 0.25 oz tube, so a $9.50 value. I love cover FX. I have tried their calming primer and their mattifying primer and loved them both. I was skeptical to try this because my T zone tends to get a little oily. However, I mixed a drop of this in with my regular primer and it’s beautiful! It gives your skin a very nice glow and makes it look healthy. I didn’t notice any increased oiliness with this product.

Sephora Ulta-Shine Lip Gel

The full sized product is $12.00. The tube I received was 1/3 the size, so a $4.00 value. I actually really liked the color of this gloss, it wasn’t as in your face as it looks in the tube. It feels really nice when you put it on. However, when it starts to wear off it does tend to get a little sticky. But not too bad!

Laura Mercier Caviar Eye Stick – Rose Gold

The full sized stick is $29.00. The stick I received is about 1/3 the size, so about a $9.60 value. This is great! It is great to wear on its own, but even better to wear as a base for a shimmery gold eyeshadow. It makes your eyeshadow pop more and helps it last longer. No complaints with this one.

Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet

The full sized tube is $39.00 for 1.3 oz.  I received a 0.25 oz tube so a $9.75 value. I really like this moisturizer. It is light-weight but still very moisturizing. My only complaint is that it seems like the tube is filled with mostly air and less product.

Glamglow Thirsty Mud Hydrating Treatment

The full sized tub is 1.7 oz for $69.00. I received a 0.14 oz tube, around $10.00 value (I’m bad at math, don’t judge!). I was so excited to see this!! I have used this in the past and absolutely love it! You can use this as a mask or an overnight treatment. It leaves your skin feeling super moisturized and glowy. It also helps if you have any dry patches from left over blemishes.

Mason Margeila Replica

I also threw this away. It smells like baby powder and old lady perfume. Not a fan at all!

Total value of the box: $42.85

So all in all, the Sephora play box has been well worth my money so far. I’m so happy to be receiving products I will actually use and from brands I am familiar with. The only downside is the perfume samples have all been bad, but, those are bonuses so I won’t complain. I highly recommend this subscription for anyone who is looking to try a beauty box but doesn’t know which one to go with. You can sign up here.

**Disclaimer**

I have mentioned in a previous post that I was trying to go cruelty-fee and not all products mentioned are cruelty-free. I will probably start giving the non-cruelty free products to my family or friends because I do want to keep getting the box. I have been happy with the amount of cruelty-free brands that have been offered.
